Waitangi Park to Puketapu via Swamp Rd

This mostly off-road e-bike loop ride starting from Waitangi Regional Park on the coast, follows the banks of the Ngaruroro River alongside very productive farmland, past Pakowhai Regional Park up to Fernhill. From there it’s a long country road (Swamp Road) to Puketapu. The return off-road route is along the Tutaekuri River via Awatoto, along the Hawkes Bay Trails.

Distance 46kms. The long shared pathway tracts alongside river banks, orchards and vineyards. There is one section along a country road that does not have a cycle lane. Cafe: Puketapu Pub

Find your route on the Hawkes Bay Trails map.

 

Route: Head south along the trail, cross the bridge and turn left and cross the bridge.

At Omahu, continue straight ahead into Swamp Road, heading to Puketapu.

Turn right > into Omarunui Road.

Turn left into Dartmoor Road.

Turn right > into Puketapu Road and follow the “Puketapu Loop” Pathway signs to Taradale beside the Tutaekuri River.

At Pettigrew Arena, follow the Pathway signs to Awatoto, and return to the Waitangi Regional Park, just a short distance south.

Places to stop: Pakowhai Country Park for toilets and a picnic. Puketapu Pub for refreshments, Pettigrew Green Arena for toilets and food.
