The loop shared pathway between Waipawa and Waipukurau (called the Tukituki Trail) has been made possible due to the construction of a new swing bridge at the northern end, thanks to the local Rotary Club, community and Council as part of the Hawkes Bay Trails. It was completed November 2017.
We started our 21.5km bicycle ride from the CHB Settlers Museum at Waipawa. As the pathways are fairly new, there is a lack of signage in some sections. Also some sections are on a gravel road, while other sections are a road track.
The terrain between Waipawa and the Tukiutki River is undulating. Both towns have a choice of cafes. We had lunch at Nola’s in Waipawa.
To see: Farmland – pasture, cropping and orchards.
Route:
* Head south on State Highway 2 out of Waipawa, cross the bridge over the Waipawa River, and take the next left (Tapairu Road).
* Continue along Tapairu Road by taking the second turning to the left (which is marked No Exit). Keep following the mix of gravel road and bike trail until you reach the swing bridge.
* Decide whether you wish to loop clockwise or anti-clockwise. The south-eastern side (left side) has stopping places along the river, ideal for picnics.
* Cross the road bridge at Waipukurau to return to Waipawa.
