Waipawa to Onga Onga

The landscape on the 55kms ride from Waipawa to Onga Onga varies from river valleys to hills to horizon reaching flat plains. The Onga Onga Road road out from Waipawa is a steady climb and provides view of the Waipawa River below. The route passes through farm lands and orchards. An ideal region for agriculture on the vast, flat plains. At Onga Onga we stopped at the General Store for refreshments before visiting the Onga Onga Historical Museum.

The museum complex is open to the public on Sundays. Onga Onga was a bustling district during the mid to late 1800’s due to the large stations that were established. The museum consists of buildings and artefacts and is well worth a visit. CLICK HERE for an article about the history of Ongaonga.

The route is a mix of undulating hills and flat roads. There are two steep descents on the return journey. Approx. distance: 54.6kms .
