About Hwenley

I moved to Hawkes Bay in 2015. I bought a new bike but after a year, decided that an ebike was the best way to explore Hawkes Bay. It meant that I could go further and arrive back home exhilarated, instead of exhausted. The ebike has put the fun back into cycling.

Park Island to Bayview via hills

The route from Park Island to Bayview via the hills, is a good way to not only test your fitness, it also gives you an opportunity to test out your gear changing and getting the best out of your e bike’s power levels. There are several hills and one hilltop with wonderful views out to sea. And then there are the amazing downhills if you are a speed hound. The roads are usually quiet but you may come across the odd logging truck. Be sure to keep over to the left.
Coffee Stop: Berry Tasty or Snapper Café. Estimated Ride distance 40-50 kms.

Te Mata Peak

For e bike riders who are used to riding along the flat pathways of the Hawkes Bay Trails, the Te Mata Peak climb can be challenging. Learning how to use your gears and adjust for pedal assist power are great skills. It is all worthy of achieving. Not only are the views amazing from the top of the Peak, you can also experience the thrill of the long downhill. Rewards for the long steady climb upwards. Est Distance: 35 kms

Waipawa – Tukituki Loop

The loop shared pathway between Waipawa and Waipukurau (called the Tukituki Trail) has been made possible due to the construction of a new swing bridge at the northern end, thanks to the local Rotary Club, community and Council as part of the Hawkes Bay Trails. It was completed November 2017.

We started our 21.5km bicycle ride from the CHB Settlers Museum at Waipawa. As the pathways are fairly new, there is a lack of signage in some sections. Also some sections are on a gravel road, while other sections are a road track.

Dartmoor Rd – Apley Rd Loop

This is another one of the E-bike Social Riders Hawkes Bay on-road, super loop, hilly rides, so be sure to start with your battery fully charged. This eBike loop ride from the Taradale Rugby Club, Guppy Road, (with an option to start from Puketapu Pub) to Apley Road via Dartmoor Road and beyond has stunning views, great downhills and a well-deserved coffee/lunch stop. Majestic snow covered ranges to see in the winter. This will test your skills changing gears to take in the ups and downs. Very rewarding. A great ride to do in spring and autumn.

If you have not yet attempted riding uphill and learnt how to use the gears and power on your e.bike, then getting some practice in before doing this ride is strongly advised.
