Three eBike rides in Taupo district

A small group of four spent four nights and three days in Taupo, to ride our eBikes on three trails. We rode the Huka Falls Loop (34kms), the Lakeside Rotary Pathway (32kms) and the Tongariro River Loop (19kms). My husband and I rode regular trail eBikes and our friends rode electric mountain bikes. Overall, our eBikes were well suited to riding the Lakeside Pathway, whereas our friends eBikes were well suited to the forest trails.

Huka Falls Loop

Total distance 34kms. Start point: Spa Park. This was the toughest ride that I have done to-date. The loop is on parts of a steep hill above the river, and meanders through forest trees and scrub. The terrain is smooth and rough, with sharp, twisty corners, and short descents and ascents. It is recommended to switch between the top two power levels and mid to low gears. Stop to take in the breath taking views. Side trip to the Aratiatia Dam to watch the water release at noon. Our lunch stop was at the Prawn Farm.

Lakeside Rotary Pathway.

Total distance 32kms. Start point: Taupo Lakefront. This is a gentle ambling ride alongside the lake. We rode south to the end point at Waiahanui and then wandered around the township. Our lunch stop was a picnic by the bridge beside the lake. Optional hot dip in the Lake.

Tongariro River Loop

Total distance 19kms. Start point: Creel Cafe and Tackle Shop. Again because this is a forest trail on the hills beside a river, it is similar to the Huka Falls Trail, but not quite as challenging and shorter. There are swing bridges to cross and steps to navigate. And there are sharp corners, with short descents and ascents. Our lunch stop was at the Mustard Seed Cafe in Turangi.

  1. Thanks Helen for this comprehensive log on Taupo rides. I have been up here this week and did the rides you suggested. All good but I must say I found Huka falls tough. I walked a fair bit wbut was still enjoyable.

    • I too found Huka Falls tough. Glad to hear that it’s not just me. Simon fell off 6 times! It took 2 of us to pull him to his feet again. Luckily no damage to him or his bike.
Definitely easier on an electric mountain bike.
