Fishers Track

The Fishers Track trail (Grade 2 Length 27km Duration 2-3 hours) begins at National Park Station. Once up on the trail, via a gentle uphill gravel road; the 6kms grassy track hugs to the side of the range. The track surface varies from smooth, with some parts deeply rutted, possibly due to motorbikes. The sweeping road at the end is gravel/shingle. The trail is 37% gravel, 18% single track (grass) and 44% quiet sealed country lane.

The landscape changes from regenerating bush of Erua Forest, and on a clear day views of North Island mountains can be seen – Taranaki, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.

As per the note on the Great Rides brochure: The western end of the trail can become slippery after heavy rainfall, and the area is exposed to snow.

We used shuttle services from the War Memorial and Horse Sculpture to return to National Park.

The morning of our ride was frosty, but the sun warmed us up nicely. We were in sunshine for most of the ride. And we were rewarded with wonderful views of the light snow on Mount Ruapehu.

    • It probably depends on how young and/or fit you are. And how the weather is. It certainly would be fun to ride there and back.
